Google NPAPI, Phase 2, TestNav Error 3025 (Java)

The following information applies to any school or district planning to take PARCC online assessments with the Google Chrome web browser on MacOS or Windows devices.

Note: This does not affect Chromebooks.

What is happening?

Google started to phase out support for the Netscape Plugin Application Programming Interface (NPAPI) architecture in January 2015. Phase 2 was introduced this week with the new Chrome browser version 42, which disables all NPAPI plug-ins by default, including Java.

What does this mean?

If the instructions contained in previous Technology Bulletins have not yet been completed on PARCC testing devices and administrative devices, then additional configuration steps will be required to use the Google Chrome web browser with the online assessments.

The error message below will occur on testing devices if the NPAPI plug-ins are disabled after the Chrome browser receives an upgrade to version 42.

And this error will occur on administrative devices when attempting to cache Online Test Sessions if the NPAPI plug-ins are disabled after the Chrome browser receives an upgrade to version 42.

What do I need to do?

Test Administrators can also quickly re-enable the NPAPI plug-ins for Java by following the steps below. However, this solution is short-term and will likely be undone when Google releases a newer version of the Chrome browser. Test Administrators should work with their Technology Coordinators to complete the longer term fix listed above.

Quick Fix to Re-Enable NPAPI Plug-ins

  1. In the address bar of the Chrome browser type chrome://flags
  2. Scroll down the page to find the Enable NPAPI heading
  3. Click Enable
  4. Finalize the change by clicking Relaunch Now at the bottom of the page
  5. Students can now login to TestNav, and Test Administrators can now Cache their sessions
